Inverted Worlds

A Bend in the Road by Todd Henson

Inverted Worlds: A Bend in the Road

I’ve increasingly been on a bit of an abstract kick of late. I’m not sure I could say why or where I’m going with it, but I’ve decided to allow myself to walk down that path and explore a while.

Today we look at one of the simpler images I’ve created that fit into a theme I’ve been thinking of as Inverted Worlds, created by inverting photos in various ways. In this case we have a simple mirror effect creating a bit more of a bend in the road than we’d typically see.

This road passes through Prince William Forest Park and is a favorite drive during autumn when leaves are changing colors.

Through the Greenway by Todd Henson

Through the Greenway

I’ve not been out photographing much lately, nor have I worked much on my photography, both because of the hot and humid weather and due to various family concerns that have occupied my time and thoughts. But I have a great desire to continue regularly creating something to show here each week. Though I initially felt completely uninspired and struggled to find anything in my back catalog to work on or show, I eventually found myself gravitating to a series of photos of palm fronds from a trip to the United States Botanic Garden back in 2009. If you’ve followed my work long enough you may know I enjoy finding images I can flip and stitch together into interesting patterns, and that’s exactly what I’ve done here. I hope you enjoy the results.

Guardian of the Forest by Todd Henson

Guardian of the Forest

I was hiking through the forest one morning when I noticed a slight movement above me, almost a shimmer. I wasn’t sure what I’d seen. There didn’t appear to be any birds or animals in the trees above, but something had moved, something had caught my attention.

I raised my camera and looked through the viewfinder. I was stunned at what I saw, at the marvel taking shape right before me. The trees were moving and shifting, merging together, and from them all emerged the Guardian of the Forest, a spirit representing, and protecting, the forest and all within it, a being of and for the forest. I couldn’t look away even if I’d wanted to. It appeared to be everywhere, all above me, all around me. And yet I was not afraid. I felt comforted. I felt at peace. I felt a part of the forest.

I’ve returned to those woods many times since, looking again for what I’d found that one special morning. Sometimes I think I feel a presence, almost as if a hand lightly rested on my shoulder. I will continue returning to the woods. I will continue looking, searching, and being a part of that spirit watching over the forest.
