Variations on a Theme: Wild Geranium - Spring 2025 by Todd Henson

While out photographing trilliums in spring my eye was also drawn to the many wild geranium blooms. I chose one particular subject that included both bud and bloom and got to work experimenting with different variations. In the end I had two versions I liked.

For the first variation I went for horizontal framing and chose a bolder, darker, more vibrant portrayal. This image is a 2-photo focus stack for a slight bit of added depth of field, though it doesn’t really add much.

Variation 1: Bolder, darker, more vibrant

For the second variation I went for square framing and chose a softer, lighter and brighter portrayal.

Variation 2: Softer, lighter, brighter

Which, if either, do you prefer? Leave a comment below and let me know.

Whispy Dreams of Wild Geranium by Todd Henson

Whispy dreams of wild geranium

Spring is a wonderful time for wildflowers, and a wonderful wildflower is wild geranium. I found a lovely example while walking back to the car after a hike with my father. I decided to get down low, resting the camera just about on the ground to explore how the geranium would look set off against the background, with my father standing beside me to shade the flower but not the background, and rotating a little here and there to explore both different views of the flower and of the background. I hope you enjoy the results.

Passing Petals by Todd Henson

Walking by I notice a bit of color on a green leaf, fallen petals from a wild geranium.

Most often I seek to photograph flowers in their prime, looking for those perfect specimens with beautifully shaped petals, full of color and life. But there is also plenty of beauty to be found in the latter stages of a flower’s existence, when its petals have faded, wilted, perhaps even fallen.

The season has passed, its time is done, a white trillium with wilted petals.
