Whispy Dreams of Wild Geranium by Todd Henson

Whispy dreams of wild geranium

Spring is a wonderful time for wildflowers, and a wonderful wildflower is wild geranium. I found a lovely example while walking back to the car after a hike with my father. I decided to get down low, resting the camera just about on the ground to explore how the geranium would look set off against the background, with my father standing beside me to shade the flower but not the background, and rotating a little here and there to explore both different views of the flower and of the background. I hope you enjoy the results.

Early Spring Virginia Bluebells by Todd Henson

A small cluster of Virginia bluebells

Near the end of March my father and I visited Seven Bends State Park on what turned out to be a very windy day. But thankfully with a little help from ridge lines that lead down to the river and block some of the wind and the periodic lulls I was able to find and photograph some of the early blooming Virginia bluebells. At that time it was still early in the season and many of the flowers had yet to bloom, showing beautiful pinks that will eventually change to the characteristic blues.

Before Virginia bluebells fully open they are pink in color

For me, flower photography can be a challenge, trying to find an interesting view or angle, something just a little different from the norm. I can’t say I achieved that here, but I did seek out views I may not have photographed before. I hope you enjoy them.

Nature’s Ornaments by Todd Henson

Nature’s Ornaments

This is a photo I lost track of and likely should have processed and posted around the holidays. But I’ve found it and I’m posting it now.

This photo shows cones from an eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) hanging like ornaments on a Christmas tree. The photo was created on August 19th of 2023 at Blandy Experimental Farm, the State Arboretum of Virginia. I loved the look of the cones and was drawn to this arrangement with the tree in the background providing a nice blue-green backdrop for the cone.
