An old railroad bridge over North Fork Shenandoah River outside Strasburg, Virginia
Today we’re looking at two views of the same scene depicting an old railroad truss bridge over the North Fork Shenandoah River with the slopes of Signal Knob in the background just outside of Strasburg, Virginia. During the Civil War, Signal Knob, which is the northern end of Massanutten Mountain, was used by both Confederate and Union Signal Corps as an observation and signaling station. The railroad line was originally part of the Manassas Gap Railroad begun in 1851 and completed in 1854, connecting Strasburg to Manassas Junction, now the city of Manassas.
In this view we can barely see the slopes of Signal Knob in the background.
