A few weeks back in mid-October my father and I went for a drive and made a short stop by Seven Bends State Park in Virginia. While there I created a few photos that showed some of the subtle color ranges foliage takes on during autumn in this region. It was a very nice day and a great one for a drive.

If you notice any slight differences in color between images it may be due to my use of physical lens filters. I was swapping back and forth between no filter and either of two Singh-Ray filters, the LB Warming Polarizer, which is my regular everyday polarizer, and the Gold-n-Blue Polarizer that accentuates gold and blue tones in various ways. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep track of which photos used which, so I leave it to you to guess which used what. :-)

Lost in the Woods

Given today is Halloween I thought I’d try to process a photo to give it a slightly dark and eerie feel, and figured the oranges and browns of fallen leaves would make for a good color scheme. Adding just a bit of green seemed to help give it that slightly off look I was going for.

I’ve shared a different version of this photo before, so if you’re curious what the scene really looked like take a look back at a foggy morning in the forest.

And just for fun, I found this vehicle parked at a train show in late September. They seemed very ready for Halloween, don’t you think? :-)

Snowy Urola Moth /  by Todd Henson

A snowy urola moth blending in under a blade of grass.

While walking through some grass at Blandy Experimental Farm I saw a small flash of white. When I got down low and looked closely I found a small white moth, a snowy urola moth, hiding under a blade of grass. It was so small and narrow it just about disappeared when viewed from up top. It looked very sleek when hunkered down with its antennae and wings folded up.

I got as close as I could and kept photographing as the moth appeared to begin “looking about” with its antennae, perhaps trying to determine if the coast was clear or if there was a threat about. I knew I wasn’t a threat, but of course it didn’t know that.

After creating these photos I moved on and left this little moth in peace.
