Field NotesAMERICAN WHITE PELICAN

American White Pelican in flight

The American White Pelican is a very distinctive species, easy to identify. It is a large white bird with black feathers along the ends of the wings and a large yellow/orange bill used to scoop up fish while swimming.

The American White Pelican in these photos caught me by surprise. I was walking along a boardwalk across parts of a lake when the Pelican took off from one side and flew to the other. I almost missed it entirely, but was lucky enough to capture a few images before it landed out of view.
