Field NotesAMERICAN BULLFROG

American Bullfrog

American Bullfrog are common across the eastern half of the United States. They are the largest of the frogs in North America, ranging in size from 3 1/2 to 8 inches. Bullfrogs lack the distinct ridge along the edges of their back that some species have, such as Green Frogs. From what I’ve read Bullfrogs are aggressive predators and will eat just about anything that moves and fits in their mouth. The male Bullfrog has an external eardrum about 1 1/2 times the size of their eye, whereas the female’s ear drum is close to the same size as their eye. Based on this I believe these photos are of a female Bullfrog. I found this Bullfrog while walking along a boardwalk through a marshy wetlands area.
